A leading London-based university is looking for an experienced Head of Payroll to oversee its payroll function on a 6-month fixed-term contract, with potential for extension. This is a hands-on leadership role, managing payroll for 900 staff using Midland iTrent – experience with this system is essential.
The Role
As Head of Payroll, you will be responsible for the effective management and improvement of the university’s payroll function, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing and managing the monthly payroll for 900 staff, including hourly-paid workers and students.
- Evaluating and improving existing payroll processes to enhance efficiency and service quality.
- Ensuring accurate administration of Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) and Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), including reconciliations and HMRC submissions.
- Managing payroll for new starters, leavers, and internal transfers.
- Overseeing staff and student expense processes, ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
- Addressing and resolving payroll-related issues efficiently.
Pensions & Compliance
- Managing tax, financial year-end processes, and reporting to support annual financial statements.
- Overseeing the accurate submission of HMRC returns, pension scheme contributions, and other statutory payments.
Payroll System & Process Management
- Supporting system updates, salary sacrifice schemes, and regulatory changes.
- Ensuring full payroll and pension compliance within the Midland iTrent HR & payroll system.
- Driving continuous improvement, leveraging automation and best practices to enhance operational efficiency.
- Collaborating with HR and Payroll System teams to establish clear, standardised procedures.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in payroll management within the higher education sector.
- Midland iTrent payroll system expertise – this is essential.
- Experience managing payroll, pensions, and compliance for large organisations.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a track record of process improvement.
- Leadership experience – supervising at least one team member.
